A fleet of diesel minibuses is usually run on the routes by First under contract to Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority. Optima Bus Corporation was awarded its first contract for the Opus ISE Series Hybrid Low-floor Bus. This contract is valued at approximately $7.5 million. The Town of Avon Transit, located in Avon, Colo., awarded Optima the contract that includes a base order of up to five Opus buses with an option for an additional 10 buses. President Bush Signs Energy Bill Into Law

President Bush has signed H.R. 6, the Energy Policy Act of 2005, into law. The President signed the bill during a ceremony in New Mexico on August 8. The Energy bill contains provisions for the advancement of electric drive technologies, and calls for increased research and development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and infrastructure.

H.R. 6, the Energy Policy Act of 2005, includes important electric drive provisions, including changes in EPAct of 1992 fleet purchase requirements that will permit electric drive vehicles to be used for alternative compliance, creation of consumer tax credits for hybrids and fuel cell vehicles, and the establishment of substantial funding and achievement baselines for the DOE’s hydrogen and fuel cell research, development and demonstration programs.

The final week before Congress’ August recess is tightly packed with action of interest to the electric drive community. First, the House and Senate Energy bill conferees are rushing to try to complete a conference report in time to send it to the President by the end of the week. While significant progress has been made on resolving or removing controversial issues, finishing action in both Houses by Friday will be a very difficult deadline to meet.

Azure Dynamics has announced that its has launched a shuttle bus program in North America based on its G1 series hybrid powertrain product. Its first sale will be to The Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation--five hybrid-electric, 20-passenger shuttle buses. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has received a $589,999 grant from the Federal Transit Adminimstration (FTA) to use towards the purchase of 20 hybrid electric diesel buses.
