Daimler
Daimler’s roadmap for sustainable transportation is comprised of optimizing combustion engines, increasing the use of alternate fuels, and achieving emission-free driving with fuels cells and battery-driven vehicles. One example of an activity in this area is the current electric drive test fleet running in London. 100 smart ed vehicles are being tested under real world conditions by select customers. Compact cars such as the smart fortwo ed are particularly suited to congested urban areas. Fuel cell technology has the greatest potential in terms of emission free driving – not only in urban areas, but also for longer distances. At the end of 2007, Daimler’s worldwide fuel cell fleet of over 100 vehicles had accumulated more than 2.35 million miles and 180,400 hours of operation. In 2010, the new generation fuel cell drive with considerably improved performance characteristics will be launched in the B-Class F-Cell – the first fuel cell vehicle produced under series production conditions. DUECO, Inc.
DUECO, in conjunction with ODYNE Corporation has developed the country’s first PHEV aerial bucket truck. Introduced to the public in October 2007, the vehicle uses an innovative design that dramatically reduces engine idle time by using a large 35kWh battery pack to power the aerial device at the worksite and provide other benefits such as electrical air-conditioning and exportable power. The system is also designed to reduce fuel consumption during normal driving by using the electric motor to assist the conventional power train and capture energy during braking. When the vehicle is charged overnight using renewable energy sources, the system can significantly reduce GHG emissions by displacing petroleum with clean electrical energy. The unit is commercially available. For more information, visit www.dueco.com.
